Despite rising gas prices, we Americans have bonded with our cars and have formed a trusting relationship with auto manufacturers. We feel snug and secure in our seat belts. We believe what we hear about safety features such as crumple zones, side impact airbags, and passenger restraint systems.
But what we don’t always hear about are the safety problems that can literally turn our lives upside down.
For example, when a vehicle rolls over in a crash, the roof structure is supposed to be designed to bear the weight of the rollover, protecting the driver and passengers from harm. Yet when safety standards are overlooked, with a wink and a nod, roofs fail and families are paralyzed or killed.
Manufacturers and their attorneys are quick to place the blame on speed or negligent driving, but this is an example of defective design.
